Jerry Lenthall's Vision for SLO County Sheriff’s Department

by Jerry Lenthall

Jerry Lenthall is a 30-year law enforcement veteran and former Chairman of the Board of Supervisors for San Luis Obispo County. Jerry possesses an ideal combination of practical experience in county government and law enforcement.

This gives Jerry a unique perspective of the complexity of government operations, and the understanding of the importance of working cooperatively with government agencies. Jerry’s sensible; no nonsense leadership style will effectively refocus resources to improve public safety while restoring accountability to the entire budget process. Jerry is committed to re-establishing public trust in the Department by providing a clear and concise direction of transparency and awareness.

The FBI, the U.S. Congress, and the California State Senate and Assembly have formally commended Jerry for his effective leadership. Jerry received the Distinguished Service Award from the San Luis Obispo County Deputy Sheriff’s Association and the San Luis Obispo Police Department. He also was twice named Employee of the Year by the City of San Luis Obispo.

Jerry graduated second in his cadet class at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Academy.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly, and a MBA from the University of Redlands.

During the past thirty five years Jerry has also owned and operated a successful small business.

Jerry’s vision for our County Sheriff’s Department:

As Sheriff my primary goals will be to aggressively maintain public safety, stop gang and drug related activity and preserve our quality of life.

My experience as a county supervisor provides me inside knowledge of the interaction between government agencies. By establishing a conservative fiscal approach we will increase the Sheriff’s Department efficiency, accountability and achieve the following initiatives:
  • Increase the number of deputies patrolling our neighborhoods by creating an independent evaluation of department operations and policies which will achieve budget savings.
  • Establish a departmental culture of transparency and accountability to restore the public’s confidence and trust.
  • Increase collaboration with Police, Fire, emergency medical services, other public safety and health agencies including County Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Services, Probation and Corrections.
  • Enhance the juvenile diversion program.
  • Expand our volunteer organizations and crime prevention in rural areas.
  • Eliminate unnecessary costly litigation.
